Umeshu (Japanese Plum Wine) is one of the most popular of current trending foods in the world. It is easy, it is quick, it tastes yummy. It is enjoyed by millions every day. They are fine and they look fantastic. Umeshu (Japanese Plum Wine) is something that I have loved my whole life.
Umeshu, or plum wine, is a popular sweet drink inside and outside Japan. This tasty drink is a great aperitif and also wonderful as a dessert wine after dinner. It's often served chilled, over ice, or mixed with soda water.
To begin with this recipe, we have to first prepare a few ingredients. You can cook umeshu (japanese plum wine) using 3 ingredients and 6 steps. Here is how you cook it.
The ingredients needed to make Umeshu (Japanese Plum Wine):
- Get 500 g Japanese green ume plums (You can buy from Mitsuwa and Nijiya, Marukai if you are in the United States. Only available for a short window in the early Summer.)
- Prepare 500 g Rock sugar
- Prepare 1000 g White liqueur (Best to use 24%~35% liqueur)
Homemade plum wine is super easy to make and amazingly tastes good. You need to be a little patient but it is worth waiting! - You can start drinking your plum wine after. Guide to Umeshu (Japanese Plum Wine): A Sweet & Sour Tipple Umeshu is a traditional type of Japanese liqueur made from ume plums steeped in sugar and alcohol. Tamitsu co. ltd, the company behind Miyazaki plum wine, has a long history in winemaking and has specialized its Umeshu flavor with different variations.
Instructions to make Umeshu (Japanese Plum Wine):
- Wash and sterilize your jar with boiled water, and dry off the jar.
- Wash the plums and remove the stems. The stems are small and deep, so use a toothpick.
- Dry off the plums and leave it on clean cloth for a half day.
- Put a layer of ume plums in the jar, then a layer of rock sugar. Repeat until all the sugar and plums are used up, and pour the white liqueur into the jar until it just covers the topmost layer of plums.
- Put the lid on the jar securely and store the plums in cool, dark place. Shake the jar everyday until rock sugar dissolves.
- After 6 months, the Umeshu is ready to drink. Enjoy!
The Umeshu gives the traditional Ume a kick with a wheaty taste. This is because the wine is brewed with wheat and takes the aroma and flavor of the rice grain. Umeshu (梅酒) is a Japanese liqueur made by steeping ume plums (while still unripe and green) in liquor (焼酎, shōchū) and sugar. Famous brands of umeshu include Choya, Takara Shuzo and Matsuyuki. Varieties are available with whole ume fruits contained in the bottle, and some people make their own umeshu at home.
